The Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market) is Funchal's most vibrant cultural landmark. Built in Art Deco style in 1940, it overflows with exotic Madeiran fruits like passionfruit, monstera deliciosa, and pitanga, as well as fresh flowers, local honey, and the island's famous fish – the Black Scabbardfish (Espada).
Getting to the Market by Bus
The Mercado dos Lavradores is located in the heart of Funchal's Old Town, near the waterfront. Almost every urban bus terminates or passes through the central bus stops within a 5-minute walk of the market.
What to See & Buy
Ground Floor – Fruit Paradise: The most famous section. Vendors in traditional dress offer tastings of exotic fruits. Don't miss the Monstera Deliciosa (a pineapple-banana hybrid!) and various passionfruit varieties.
Fish Hall – Espada Central: Watch local fishermen unload the Black Scabbardfish. These deep-sea creatures look alien but taste incredible – order Espada com Banana at any local restaurant!
Flower Stalls: Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise), orchids, and an explosion of colors. You can buy pre-arranged bouquets packaged for air travel.
Opening Hours
The market is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It's closed on Sundays and public holidays. Arrive early (before 10 AM) for the best selection and fewer crowds.
