At 860 meters elevation, Ribeiro Frio is famous for its trout hatchery and as the starting point for levada walks through ancient laurisilva forest. The name means "Cold River" referring to the mountain streams.

Boarding reference: Funchal — Teleférico-Término. Select a journey that names Ribeiro Frio; check the route page for the correct direction and any branch notes. The town name alone does not identify a boarding bay.
From the stop
Ribeiro Frio is the access point named for PR11 Vereda dos Balcões and the start of PR10. For Balcões, return to Ribeiro Frio; for a one-way PR10 walk, arrange the exit from Portela separately.
The way back
Choose the last usable return on the route page before leaving. Use its dated timetable where available, otherwise its linked SIGA sheet. Match the day, direction and stop; a departure from the terminus is not a departure from your stop.
