Use route 181. SIGA currently names it Funchal – Curral das Freiras and publishes outward and return services on the official timetable page.
The route serves several parts of the valley. Match the stop to what you want to visit, and choose the return before leaving Funchal.
Route 801 · Direct route listed by SIGA
Use route 801. SIGA’s current Santana page lists 801 specifically as Funchal / Santana, separately from the shorter local services shown alongside it.
The route reaches Santana town, not every attraction across the municipality. Plan any onward leg separately and keep the official return in view.
Route 702 · Verify the through-service
Check route 702 with care. Its SIGA-linked sheet shows Funchal, Machico, Caniçal and Baía D’Abra columns, but SIGA’s current page heading is Caniçal – Baía D’Abra and the sheet retains 2024 period notes.
Confirm with SIGA or the operator that your chosen trip runs through from Funchal. Not every listed journey reaches Baía D’Abra; plan trail conditions and the return separately.
These trips leave Funchal for another municipality, so use an intermunicipal product rather than a municipal-only one. The right ticket depends on how many journeys you will make and where you buy it; check the current fare guide instead of assuming a route-specific price.
