Where to stay in Madeira for the bus

Where you sleep decides how far the bus takes you. This guide ranks areas, not hotels, by the number of routes in our route data that call at stops there, and says which areas sit on the Aerobus from the airport.

Which base works best without a car?

Funchal, by a wide margin: every corridor on the island starts there, the urban network is dense, and the Aerobus serves both the centre and the hotel zone along the Estrada Monumental.

SIGA’s Hotels A–Z poster lists 113 hotels and apartments by Aerobus stop, so staying on that corridor means the airport bus stops near your door. Caniço, Santa Cruz and Machico are good second choices on the airport side; the west coast and Santana suit a quieter stay with fewer departures.

How the ranking is built

For each area we count the verified routes on its destination guides, excluding buses that reach only a nearby town. Funchal also includes its published urban services and regional lines naming Funchal. Hotel counts come from SIGA’s Aerobus poster. These are published connections, not a measure of service frequency or hotel quality.

Funchal centre and the hotel zone

The centre is where the regional routes to the east, west and mountains depart and where the seafront stops cluster. The hotel zone along the Estrada Monumental, from the Avenida do Infante to Praia Formosa, is covered by urban routes and by Aerobus stops 10 to 26. Either is a sound base; the centre saves a connection for day trips.

Caniço, Santa Cruz and Machico

Only Caniço lies between Funchal and the airport. Santa Cruz is beside the airport; Machico is beyond it to the northeast. Caniço de Baixo has route 555 between Ponta da Oliveira and Funchal; for Reis Magos, route 556 has one trip each way on Sundays and holidays only; Santa Cruz is the airport town; Machico has the golden-sand beach and route 702 towards Ponta de São Lourenço. From any of them, a day in Funchal is easy, a day in the west is long.

Santana, the west coast and the valleys

Santana sits on the 801, 850 and 875 corridors to Funchal; Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol and Calheta are on the Rodoeste west-coast routes; Curral das Freiras has a single route, 181. These are rewarding bases for walkers who accept fewer departures and plan the return first. Monte, above Funchal, is well connected but steep.

What this guide does not do

It does not name or rank hotels and this site has no accommodation booking partner. The hotel names in the airport guide are SIGA’s own list of which Aerobus stop serves each property, reproduced for stop-finding only.
