Madeira bus fares and tickets in 2026

The price depends on where you travel and whether you buy before boarding.

The short answer

Adult single fares

Municipal · On board €2,05 Pre-purchased GIRO: €1,45
Intermunicipal · On board €2,65 Pre-purchased GIRO: €2,00

For an occasional trip, buy a paper ticket on the bus or pre-purchase journeys on a GIRO Bilhete card. Pre-purchased journeys cost less. Choose municipal for travel within one municipality and intermunicipal for regular buses across Madeira or Porto Santo. Aerobus has its own prices.

On-board vs pre-purchased fares

Adult fares are shown first; the child fare applies from age 6 through 12 inclusive.

Travel zone On board Pre-purchased GIRO Child on board Child pre-purchased
MunicipalWithin the municipality selected for the ticket. €2,05 €1,45 €1,00 €0,75
IntermunicipalRegular public buses across Madeira and Porto Santo; Aerobus is excluded. €2,65 €2,00 €1,30 €1,00

Standard pre-purchased journeys are loaded in sets of at least two. Municipal transfers must be validated within 45 minutes on the same operator; intermunicipal transfers within 90 minutes on any operator. Aerobus tickets do not use these transfer rules.

Where to buy and load GIRO

Use our current sales-point list to find a counter or machine, and the GIRO guide for the card types and loading process. Availability can vary, so check the listed point before making a special trip.

Municipal and intermunicipal day tickets

The official tariff lists GIRO Bilhete products valid for 24, 48, 72, 120 and 168 consecutive hours from the first validation on regular buses. Choose the municipal or intermunicipal scope before loading; these products exclude Aerobus. Confirm the current sales point before relying on one.

Validity Municipal · Adult Intermunicipal · Adult Municipal · Child (6–12) Intermunicipal · Child (6–12)
1 day 24 hours €4,95 €6,55 €2,55 €3,50
2 days 48 hours €8,70 €11,60 €4,50 €6,05
3 days 72 hours €12,50 €16,70 €6,60 €8,70
5 days 120 hours €18,00 €24,00 €9,35 €12,50
7 days 168 hours €23,50 €31,10 €12,10 €16,20

Children

Children travel free until the day before their 6th birthday, with proof of identity. From age 6 through 12 inclusive, the child fare applies. From the 13th birthday, use the adult fare.

Aerobus is separate

Aerobus uses a dedicated airport-service fare rather than the municipal or intermunicipal price.

Adult · On board €6,70
Adult · Pre-purchased GIRO €5,55
Child (6–12) · On board €3,30
Child (6–12) · Pre-purchased GIRO €2,75

The tariff lists a pre-purchased return ticket, but marks it as available on a date still to be announced. Do not plan around that return product until SIGA confirms sales have started.

Tourist tickets published in the tariff

Regional tourist tickets cover public operators across Madeira and Porto Santo, including Aerobus. The regulation publishes these prices, but the cited notice does not confirm today’s sales point or stock: ask SIGA where the product can currently be bought before relying on it.

Validity Adult Child (6–12)
24 hours €13,75 €7,10
48 hours €18,35 €9,35
72 hours €23,00 €11,70
120 hours €29,50 €15,15
168 hours €36,00 €18,50

Monthly passes: scope and eligibility

Municipal and intermunicipal monthly passes allow unlimited regular-bus travel within the zones bought, on any public operator, but exclude Aerobus. They use a personalized, non-transferable GIRO Passe.

30-day pass

The 30-day pass is the ordinary non-resident option. It runs for 30 consecutive days and the application requires identity, a Portuguese NIF and a passport-style photo.

Municipal · Published monthly price €41,00
Intermunicipal · Published monthly price €51,00

GIRO Passe

Social Base, 4_23, Student +23, +65, veteran, retired, invalidity and operator-employee profiles are eligibility-based passes, mainly for Madeira residents or equivalent residents, with supporting documents. They are not automatic tourist discounts.

4_23 is for eligible students through age 23; Student +23 is for eligible students aged 24–25. Certain documented Erasmus, exchange, internship, training or regional volunteer cases are exceptions for non-residents.

+65 is for residents or equivalent residents aged 65 or over and requires its profile documentation; age alone does not make a visitor eligible.
