Check the bus and both stops before planning the journey.
SIGA says some buses are equipped for passengers with reduced mobility and publishes a wheelchair pre-booking process; it does not promise every departure is accessible.
What is published about buses?
SIGA’s FAQ says some new buses are equipped for passengers with reduced mobility. Its wheelchair-service page specifically says Horários do Funchal carries wheelchair users on buses displaying the wheelchair symbol, subject to its General Conditions, Annex V.
For these regular HF buses, SIGA says no reservation is needed, subject to the bus’s capacity. This is distinct from the registered pre-booking service described below. SIGA also states that wheelchair carriage on regular public services is not possible in the Zonas Altas do Funchal because of the vehicles used there; ask HF about its separate special transport service.
Those sources do not publish a route-by-route low-floor allocation, ramp dimensions or a guarantee for a particular airport departure. We have no published stop-level accessibility assessment here. A stop name, location pin or shelter flag cannot confirm step-free boarding.
Request assistance before travelling
SIGA’s wheelchair-service page sets out registration, proof of a declared disability of at least 60%, and pre-booking after acceptance. It describes a separate route for holders of a qualifying disability parking card using their tax number and card number.
The request has a cutoff on the second day before travel. Read the exact deadline and eligibility conditions on the linked SIGA service page before submitting. The page does not explain acceptance of overseas visitor documents; ask SIGA rather than assuming eligibility. A request is not confirmation of a suitable bus.
Check your stop and return journey
Ask the operator to confirm the exact boarding and alighting stops, the vehicle for your chosen journey and whether the ramp or lift can be used at both stops. Give your wheelchair dimensions and say whether you can transfer to a seat.
Ask your accommodation or someone at the stop to check the pavement, kerb, slope, crossing and space to wait. These are practical checks, not certified accessible routes. Repeat them for the return direction and any interchange; the opposite side of the road may differ.
Who to contact
SIGA publishes these operator contacts: Horários do Funchal +351 291 705 555; CAM +351 291 201 151; SIGA Rodoeste +351 291 220 148. SIGA lists [email protected] for general enquiries.
For CAM and SIGA Rodoeste, the SIGA sources reviewed do not give a separate departure-by-departure low-floor list or a guaranteed assistance response time. Ask the operator for confirmation of your specific journey.
Sources and scope
SIGA sources reviewed on 15 October 2026. Route numbers are matched to SIGA’s 2026 conversion table. Older PDF headings retain their old numbers; a snapshot is not a live service update.
