Madeira by bus: tips for a smoother day
A little preparation makes exploring without a car easier. Sort out the journey home before you set off—not when you reach the last stop.
Before you leave
- Check today’s timetable and service notices.
- Know your return stop and an earlier bus home.
- Pack small cash, your return fare and a little extra.
Small cash, with a little in reserve
Official payment rule: SIGA says tickets bought from the driver are paid in cash, not by bank card. SIGA FAQ ↗
Practical advice: Prepare the exact fare if possible, or small euro coins and notes. Do not rely on paying with a large note or receiving change. Carry a little extra in small denominations in case the fare has changed, and keep enough aside for your return journey. Having payment ready helps boarding go smoothly for everyone. This is preparation advice, not an exact-change requirement published in the FAQ.
Fares & tickets →Plan the way back first
Check the return timetable for your actual travel date and direction. Find the return stop before walking away; do not assume it is directly opposite the arrival stop. Check official stop information and ask the driver, while safely stopped, where and when the last bus back leaves. Show your destination if there is a language barrier. If answers conflict, ask the operator to clarify. A confirmation is useful, but not a guarantee against later disruption.
The right timetable for the right day
Read the timetable legend and footnotes: weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays may have different services, as may school days and school holidays where specified. Local celebrations, road closures or special arrangements can also affect a journey. Check current SIGA notices before leaving, not just an old screenshot, search result or this guide. Times at the route’s starting point are not necessarily times at your stop.
SIGA service notices ↗Leave room for delays—and a backup
Allow extra time and aim for an earlier return, especially before a flight, cruise departure or important connection. A scheduled bus can be delayed, diverted or cancelled; do not assume a missing bus will arrive shortly. Check notices or contact the operator. Save its contact details and decide what you would do if the last service did not run. A taxi or transfer needs a separate budget and availability check: spare bus-fare coins are not a taxi budget.
Check the destination as well as the number
SIGA’s renumbering information shows old and new route numbers together. Compare both with the official timetable and check the direction and destination on the bus. One old route may correspond to several new services; matching an old number alone is not enough. Ask before boarding if the display or timetable is unclear.
SIGA old → new numbers ↗Make the practical bits easy
Arrive at the stop before the scheduled time. Save the timetable, stop location and operator contact offline, noting when you saved them, and keep your phone charged. Check the walk from the stop: a short distance on a map can still involve steep slopes or steps. If you need accessible transport, confirm arrangements with SIGA before travelling. Carry water and suitable layers; check current weather and official trail or attraction closures before committing to an outing.
