High above Monte at 870 meters, Terreiro da Luta is a peaceful hilltop marked by a striking statue of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace). This monument, erected after World War I, stands amid gardens with sweeping views over Funchal bay and the surrounding mountains.

What to see at Terreiro da Luta
The 5-meter statue of Our Lady of Peace was made from anchor chains of ships sunk by German U-boats during WWI. Beautiful landscaped gardens surround the monument. Panoramic viewpoint over Funchal, the airport, and the Desertas Islands.
Best time to visit
Morning for the clearest views. The gardens are peaceful year-round. Combine with Monte for a comprehensive tour of Funchal's hill suburbs. The area is especially beautiful during the flower season (April-May).
