At 860 meters elevation, Ribeiro Frio is famous for its trout hatchery and as the starting point for levada walks through ancient laurisilva forest. The name means "Cold River" referring to the mountain streams.
How to Get to Ribeiro Frio by Bus
As of 2025, non-residents (ages 12+) must pay a €3 entry fee to hike any classified "PR" trail in Madeira. Starting in 2026, this fee increases to €4.50.
